Real-World vs WLTP Range: What to Expect from an Imported EV in Winter

The WLTP number on a listing is a lab result, not a promise. If you're importing a used EV from Germany or the Netherlands and plan to actually drive it through a Spanish winter — or worse, through the car's own colder country of origin before it ships — you need to know the gap between paper and pavement.

Why WLTP numbers exist and why they diverge from reality

WLTP (Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicle Test Procedure) is a standardized lab test run at a controlled ambient temperature, moderate and predictable acceleration, no climate control load, and tyres at ideal pressure. It exists so buyers can compare cars on equal terms, not so you can plan a road trip. The test is a reasonable proxy for mild, dry, temperate driving — think a spring afternoon at 20°C with light traffic. Almost nobody actually drives an imported EV exclusively in those conditions.

How much range an EV actually loses in winter

The honest answer is a range, not a number: expect to lose roughly 15% to 30% of the WLTP figure in cold weather, with the worst cases pushing higher on short trips. Three factors drive the loss, and they stack.

  • Cabin heating — resistive heaters (common on older and cheaper EVs) can draw 3-6 kW continuously; heat pumps (increasingly standard on newer models) cut that penalty roughly in half
  • Battery chemistry efficiency — lithium-ion cells lose ionic conductivity below around 10°C, meaning the pack itself delivers less usable energy even before you turn on any accessory
  • Cold starts and short trips — a battery that never warms to its optimal operating temperature never recovers full efficiency, so a car used for many short cold journeys loses proportionally more than one on a long steady motorway run

Why this matters more for an imported car than a locally bought one

A Spanish buyer test-driving a used EV at a dealership in July gets zero information about winter behaviour. Someone importing from Germany or the Netherlands has an advantage here: northern European sellers and forums often discuss winter range candidly, because their owners live it every year. Before buying, search the model and battery generation together with terms like 'winter range' or 'Verbrauch Winter' on German owner forums — real numbers from real owners in real cold beat any brochure figure.

Does heat pump equipment matter that much when importing?

Yes, enough to be a genuine buying criterion. A heat pump is usually a factory option or a trim-dependent feature rather than something you can retrofit. When two similar used EVs are priced closely, the one with heat pump climate control is worth paying a premium for if you expect real winter use — it can be the difference between a 20% and a 35% range hit.

Should I distrust the seller's stated range entirely?

Not entirely — WLTP is still useful for comparing two cars against each other. Just treat it as a ceiling, not an expectation. Plan any long or unfamiliar route on an imported EV's real range, not the sticker range, especially for the first winter you own it before you've calibrated your own driving pattern against the car.

WLTP tells you which car is more efficient than another. It does not tell you how far you'll get on a January morning with the heater on.
