Why Renault leased the battery separately in the first place

For much of the Zoe's production run, Renault offered buyers a lower upfront purchase price by separating the battery from the car: you bought the car itself, but rented the battery pack from Renault under a separate monthly contract. The logic at the time was to make EVs more affordable and to reassure early buyers worried about battery degradation, since Renault guaranteed a minimum capacity level under the lease and would replace or service the pack if it fell below that threshold. Later production years shifted toward selling the battery outright as buyer confidence in EV batteries grew and this leasing structure became less necessary.

Why this matters enormously when importing a used Zoe

If you import a Zoe with a leased battery, that lease contract does not simply disappear or automatically transfer with a friendly reset. In practice, the battery lease is typically tied to the original French (or other market) contract and the previous owner, and transferring it to a new owner in a different country involves contacting Renault directly, is not always straightforward, and can in some cases not be transferable in the way you'd expect for an intra-EU import. Buy a leased-battery Zoe without resolving this and you risk ending up with a car whose battery you effectively don't own outright, with no ongoing contract in your name to guarantee its performance either.

How to check before you buy

• Ask the seller directly and explicitly: 'Is the battery owned or leased, and is there an active Renault battery contract?' — do not assume based on year alone, as both types coexisted for years
• Request the original sales documentation, which should state clearly whether the battery was sold with the car or under a separate lease agreement
• Contact Renault (or a Renault dealer) with the VIN to confirm the current battery ownership status and whether any lease is still active and in whose name
• If a lease is active, get written confirmation from Renault of what it costs to buy out the battery outright, or what a transferred lease would cost monthly, before finalizing the purchase price

What it means financially if the battery is still leased

A leased battery typically comes with an ongoing monthly fee that varies by battery size and the terms of the original contract. If you import a Zoe expecting to own the whole car outright and later discover a live monthly battery cost you weren't budgeting for, it materially changes the total cost of ownership. Conversely, if Renault confirms the lease can be bought out for a defined lump sum, that number should be treated as part of the purchase price when comparing the deal to a Zoe sold with an owned battery.

Are all Renault Zoe imports affected by this?

No — many Zoes, particularly later production years and specific trims, were sold with the battery owned outright from day one. The point is not to avoid the Zoe, which remains one of the more affordable EVs to import; it's to never assume either way and to verify the specific car's status before agreeing a price.

Does this affect the Spanish IEDMT tax treatment?

No — the 0% IEDMT for fully electric vehicles applies to the car regardless of how the battery was originally financed. Battery leasing is a separate commercial arrangement with Renault, not a tax or customs classification issue.
