Importing a Car to the Costa del Sol: Marbella and Malaga Expat Guide 2026

The Costa del Sol has more foreign-plated cars per square kilometre than anywhere else in Spain, and more expats overpaying at local dealerships. Between Marbella's premium tastes and Malaga's huge international community, the question of where to buy and how to register a car comes up daily. This guide gives the answers for 2026.

The Costa del Sol car market in numbers

Malaga province has one of the most expensive used car markets in Spain. A 3-year-old Mercedes GLC 220d lists at 42,000-46,000 EUR in Marbella dealerships; the same car in Munich sells for 33,000-36,000 EUR. A 2-year-old Porsche Macan is 68,000 EUR locally versus 55,000 EUR in Stuttgart. Demand from wealthy international residents, limited supply and the ITP transfer tax of 8% in Andalusia on local used purchases (on the official value, capped for older cars) all push prices up. Importing from Germany or the Netherlands, paying IEDMT instead of ITP and choosing a low-CO2 model, routinely saves 15-25%.

Which cars are worth importing to Marbella

  • Premium SUVs: Mercedes GLC and GLE, BMW X3 and X5, Audi Q5 and Q7, Porsche Macan and Cayenne. Huge choice in Germany, savings of 7,000-15,000 EUR after tax.
  • Plug-in hybrids: BMW 330e, Mercedes C300e, Volvo XC60 T6 Recharge, Range Rover Evoque PHEV. At under 50 g/km they pay 0% IEDMT, which is the biggest single lever on a premium import.
  • EVs: Tesla Model Y and 3, BMW iX, Mercedes EQE, Porsche Taycan. 0% IEDMT and Dutch and German used EV prices are still soft.
  • Convertibles and coupes for the climate: Mercedes E-Class Cabrio, BMW 4 Series Convertible, Porsche 718 Boxster. These have low mileage and good history in Germany.
  • Not worth it: high-CO2 V8s over 200 g/km unless very cheap abroad, because 14.75% IEDMT erases much of the saving; and old right-hand drive UK cars.

UK expats: bring the car or buy in Germany?

The Costa del Sol has the largest British population in Spain, and since Brexit the calculation has shifted. If you are relocating and your car qualifies for the transfer-of-residence exemption (owned 6 months, applied within 60 days of residence, kept 12 months), bringing it is free of duty, VAT and IEDMT; you pay LHD headlights (350-2,500 EUR), CoC, ITV and DGT. If you do not qualify, a UK car pays 21% VAT plus IEDMT plus customs fees, and a left-hand drive equivalent from Germany is almost always cheaper and easier to sell on later. Right-hand drive cars trade at a 15-25% discount on the Spanish used market when you come to sell.

Local logistics: ITV, DGT and town halls

  • ITV stations for pre-registration: Malaga (several), Marbella (San Pedro de Alcantara), Estepona, Fuengirola, Velez-Malaga. Book online; San Pedro and Malaga capital are the most used by importers. 45-70 EUR.
  • DGT Malaga office: appointment required, typically 1-2 weeks; professional registration through a gestor or importer skips the queue.
  • Padron: Marbella, Estepona, Mijas, Benalmadena and Fuengirola town halls issue the certificate the same day with a rental contract or deed. Some ask for an in-person appointment.
  • IVTM road tax: Marbella is among the pricier municipalities for high-power cars (around 220 EUR for a 200 hp car); Mijas and Estepona are lower. EVs get 75% discounts in most Costa municipalities.
  • Transport: a car from Germany reaches Malaga province by truck in 5-8 days, 900-1,200 EUR; from the Netherlands 1,000-1,300 EUR.

Worked example: 2023 Mercedes GLC 300e from Germany to Marbella

  • Purchase in Germany: 44,500 EUR (Marbella dealer price for equivalent: 56,000-59,000 EUR)
  • Transport to Marbella: 1,100 EUR
  • CoC: 180 EUR
  • ITV San Pedro: 60 EUR
  • IEDMT: 0% (PHEV, 15 g/km) = 0 EUR
  • DGT, plates, IVTM pro rata: 300 EUR
  • Importer fee including pre-purchase inspection in Germany: 750 EUR
  • Total on Spanish plates: 46,890 EUR. Saving versus local: 9,000-12,000 EUR.

The foreign plates trap on the Costa

The Guardia Civil runs regular checks on the A-7 and in urbanisations targeting foreign-plated cars driven by residents. A resident driving on UK, Dutch or German plates beyond the registration period faces a 500 EUR fine, immobilisation and a follow-up from AEAT for the unpaid registration tax. If you have been here more than a couple of months on foreign plates, register the car or replace it now; the exemption disappears at day 60 of residence and the fines start soon after.

Frequently asked questions

I am not resident but keep a car at my Marbella apartment. Can I register it here?

Yes. Non-residents can register a car at a Spanish property using the NIE and the deed or a rental contract. It removes the 6-month limit on foreign plates and makes insurance and ITV straightforward. IEDMT applies normally; the residence exemption does not.

Is it safe to buy a car in Germany without seeing it?

With a pre-purchase inspection by an independent engineer (100-250 EUR) and a dealer that provides a full service history and a written guarantee, yes; German consumer law gives you a 12-month minimum warranty from dealers even as a foreign buyer. Private sales are riskier and better done in person or through an importer who inspects and collects.

How long from choosing a car in Germany to plates in Marbella?

Two to four weeks is typical: inspection and purchase in a few days, transport a week, ITV and AEAT filing within days of arrival, DGT registration one to two weeks.
