Import a Car from the USA to Spain: Duty, VAT, DUA and Individual Homologation

Americans relocating to Spain and enthusiasts chasing a Mustang, a Corvette or a full-size pickup ask the same question: what does it really take to register a US car in Spain? The answer involves customs, two taxes and an engineering process called individual homologation. Here is the full picture for 2026.

The three layers: customs, taxes and homologation

A car from the United States has no EU type approval, so Spain treats it as a third-country vehicle on two fronts. First, customs: the car must be declared at a Spanish port with a DUA and pay 21% VAT on its customs value (value of the car plus freight and insurance) plus import duty, which is 10% by default. Since 1 July 2026, Regulation (EU) 2026/1455 sets the duty at 0% for cars of US origin (chapter 87, in force until 31 December 2029), but only if the car was actually built in the US and you can prove it (origin statement or certificate, plant data from the VIN) and it travelled directly from the US or under customs supervision. Buying from a US seller is not proof of origin: a Ford built in Mexico or a Toyota built in Japan and sold in Texas still pays 10%. The Commission can suspend the benefit, so confirm the current rate with a customs agent or TARIC before you buy. Second, technical: because there is no EU Certificate of Conformity, the car must go through individual homologation (homologacion individual) at an accredited laboratory before the ITV will accept it. Only then can you file the IEDMT registration tax and get plates from the DGT.

Shipping from the US: ports, methods and costs

  • RoRo (roll-on, roll-off) from New York, Baltimore or Savannah to Valencia, Barcelona or Algeciras: 1,200-2,000 USD for a car, 2,000-3,000 USD for a pickup, 3-5 weeks in transit.
  • Shared container from the East Coast: 1,800-2,800 USD, safer for classic or high-value cars, a few extra days for consolidation.
  • West Coast departures add 600-1,000 USD and 2-3 weeks.
  • Marine insurance: 1-1.5% of declared value.
  • US export clearance: the title must be filed with US Customs 72 hours before loading. A lien on the title blocks export.

Customs at the Spanish port: DUA, 10% duty and 21% VAT

A customs agent at the port files the DUA. Customs value = purchase price (or appraised value for older cars) plus freight and insurance. On a 2022 Ford Mustang GT bought for 38,000 USD (about 35,000 EUR) with 2,000 EUR of freight: customs value 37,000 EUR, duty 3,700 EUR, VAT on 40,700 EUR = 8,547 EUR. Total at the port: 12,247 EUR before the car has even been inspected. Agent fees run 300-500 EUR and port handling another 200-400 EUR.

If you are relocating to Spain after at least 12 months in the US and have owned the car for 6 months or more, the transfer-of-residence exemption removes duty, VAT and the IEDMT entirely. You have 60 days from becoming a Spanish resident to apply and must keep the car for 12 months. For someone bringing a 60,000 USD truck, that exemption is worth well over 20,000 EUR. It does not remove the homologation requirement.

Individual homologation: what the lab actually checks

Spanish regulations (Real Decreto 750/2010 and the 2020 update) allow a single US vehicle to be approved on an individual basis. An accredited laboratory (IDIADA, Applus, TUV Rheinland Spain, CTAG and others) inspects the car against EU requirements and issues a report that the ITV station uses to create the Spanish technical file (ficha tecnica). The key points are:

  • Lighting: US amber rear turn signals are fine, but red rear indicators must be converted to amber. Headlamps must produce an EU beam pattern; many US units are marked DOT only and need replacing with ECE-marked units (300-2,500 EUR).
  • Side markers and reflectors: sometimes need masking or removal.
  • Speedometer in km/h: most modern US cars switch digitally; older ones need a dial overlay.
  • Emissions: for cars under 4 years old the lab usually accepts EPA data; older or modified cars may need a chassis dyno test (1,200-2,000 EUR).
  • Tyres with EU marking, seatbelt anchorages, glass markings, rear fog light (must be added on most US cars, 60-150 EUR).
  • Noise test for V8s: a Hellcat or a Camaro with aftermarket exhaust may fail and need the stock system refitted.

Budget 1,200-2,500 EUR for the laboratory report on a common model that the lab has seen before, and up to 4,000 EUR for something unusual. Lead time is 3-8 weeks. Some labs have existing reports for high-volume models (Mustang, Wrangler, Ram 1500, Tesla Model 3 US spec), which makes the process faster and cheaper.

ITV, IEDMT and registration

With the homologation report, the car goes to an ITV station for its pre-registration inspection (40-80 EUR, report valid 60 days). Then you file form 576 with AEAT for the IEDMT within 30 days. American cars are hit hard here: a 5.0 V8 Mustang at 270 g/km CO2 pays 14.75% of its official table value, easily 5,000-6,000 EUR, and a Ram 1500 with a 5.7 Hemi pays the same top band. A Tesla Model 3 imported from the US pays 0%. Finally, the DGT registration fee (about 100 EUR), IVTM road tax at the town hall and plates.

Worked total: 2022 Ford Mustang GT, no exemption

  • Purchase: 35,000 EUR
  • Shipping, insurance, US export: 2,600 EUR
  • Duty 0% (Mustang built in Flat Rock, Michigan, US origin proven) and VAT 21% on 37,600: 7,896 EUR
  • Customs agent and port: 700 EUR
  • Homologation lab, headlights, fog light, rear indicators: 3,200 EUR
  • ITV, IEDMT (14.75%), DGT, plates, IVTM: 6,200 EUR
  • Total on Spanish plates: approximately 55,600 EUR

If the origin cannot be proven and the general 10% duty applies, duty adds 3,760 EUR plus about 790 EUR of extra VAT, and the total goes back to roughly 60,000 EUR.

The same Mustang GT, EU spec, imported from Germany where it was sold officially: around 42,000 EUR purchase plus 5,500 EUR IEDMT and 1,200 EUR of fees, no customs, no homologation. With the 0% duty the gap has narrowed to roughly 7,000 EUR, still in favour of Germany for a Mustang. The US route only wins for models never sold in Europe (F-150, Silverado, Tahoe, Charger), for relocating residents with the exemption, or for classics over 30 years old, which benefit from reduced VAT and simplified approval.

Frequently asked questions

Can I import a US car that is less than 6 months old?

Yes, but it is treated as a new vehicle for VAT purposes even if you have the residence exemption for duty. New cars (under 6 months or under 6,000 km) always pay Spanish VAT. Wait until the car passes both thresholds before shipping if you can.

Will a US-spec Tesla work in Spain?

It drives and charges, but the NACS charging port needs a CCS2 adapter or retrofit, and the homologation lab will check the lighting and the charge port markings. Supercharger access in Spain works with the adapter. Tesla EU service centres do support US VINs but with limits on warranty.

How long does the whole US import take?

Shipping 4-5 weeks, customs 1-2 weeks, homologation 3-8 weeks, ITV and registration 2-3 weeks. Plan on 3-4 months door to plates.

Caralyze coordinates US-to-Spain imports with our partner labs and customs agents: we quote the full landed cost before you ship, handle the DUA, the individual homologation and the DGT registration, and we speak English. Send us the VIN and we will tell you honestly whether the car is worth importing.
