Cost of Charging an Imported EV: Home vs Public Charging Compared

Two owners of the same imported EV can end up with very different fuel bills depending almost entirely on where they charge. Understanding the real gap between home and public charging costs is essential to honestly calculating what an imported EV will cost you to run.

Why the price per kWh varies so much

Home charging in Spain is billed at your regular household electricity rate, which varies by tariff, time-of-use band and whether you're on a plan optimized for off-peak EV charging. Public charging, by contrast, has to cover the cost of the hardware, installation, land or lease, network operation and often a profit margin for the operator — and rapid DC chargers in particular carry a significant cost premium over slower AC charging. The result is that public rapid charging can easily cost several times more per kWh than charging at home overnight.

What this means in practice for an imported EV

If you have home charging available and use it for the large majority of your charging, your imported EV's running cost per kilometer will typically undercut even an efficient diesel by a wide margin. If you rely primarily on public charging — common for apartment dwellers without a home charger — the cost advantage over a combustion car narrows substantially, and in some cases with expensive rapid charging used frequently, may not beat a very efficient hybrid at all on pure fuel cost alone.

The off-peak tariff opportunity

Spanish electricity pricing includes time-of-use bands, with overnight hours typically priced meaningfully lower than peak daytime hours. An EV owner who schedules charging to start automatically during the cheapest overnight window — most wallboxes and many cars support scheduled charging — can reduce their effective home charging cost noticeably compared to charging whenever convenient during the day. This is one of the simplest and most underused ways to lower an imported EV's real running cost.

Comparing the two realistically

  • Home overnight charging: the cheapest option by a clear margin, but only available to those with a private or reserved parking space
  • Public AC (slow/destination) charging: moderate cost, often found at shopping centers, workplaces or hotels — a reasonable middle ground for topping up during the day
  • Public DC rapid/ultra-rapid charging: the most expensive per kWh by far, best reserved for road trips and genuine range emergencies rather than routine daily charging

Factoring this into your import decision

Before importing an EV, honestly assess where you'll actually charge day to day. If home charging isn't realistic, the total cost of ownership calculation changes meaningfully, and it's worth weighing that against a plug-in hybrid or an efficient combustion import instead, where fuel cost doesn't hinge on charger access in the same way.

Does the imported EV's charging speed capability affect the cost equation?

Indirectly, yes — a car that charges quickly on AC can make public destination charging more practical and reduce reliance on expensive rapid DC charging, which helps keep average cost per kWh lower even without home access.

Are public charging subscription plans worth it?

For frequent public charging users, a subscription with a network operator can meaningfully lower the per-kWh rate compared to ad hoc pay-as-you-go pricing — worth comparing against your actual usage pattern once you know how much you'll rely on public charging.
