How to Check Your Environmental Label After Registering an Imported Car in Spain

The label is assigned automatically, not requested

Unlike most registration steps, the environmental label does not require a separate application. The moment an imported car is entered into the DGT's vehicle registry, the system automatically calculates which label applies based on the vehicle's technical data. You do not receive a physical sticker by post unless you buy one voluntarily to display on the windscreen; the label that counts legally is the one recorded in the DGT's database.

Three ways to check your environmental label

• DGT's Sede Electrónica (online headquarters): in the environmental label lookup section, enter the plate number and get the result in seconds.
• The miDGT app: log in with your credentials, and the 'my vehicles' section shows the label assigned to each car registered in your name.
• By phone on 060, or by appointment at a Jefatura de Tráfico office, if you prefer to check in person or by phone.

What to do if the label assigned is not what you expected

If the label that comes up does not match what you calculated before importing the car, first check that the fuel type and Euro standard on the Spanish technical file (ficha técnica / tarjeta ITV) match the vehicle's original Certificate of Conformity. An error made while registering the car — for example, an incorrectly transcribed Euro standard — can lead to a wrong label, and it is corrected by presenting the original documentation at a Jefatura de Tráfico office.

When it is worth buying the physical sticker

The physical environmental sticker is optional, sold at tobacconists and approved online outlets. It is not required to access Low Emission Zones, since most camera-based enforcement systems identify the vehicle by plate and query the DGT database directly, but it can make things easier during visual roadside checks or high-pollution episodes.

The environmental label does not arrive in the post — you have to check it actively to confirm the DGT assigned the right one to your imported car.
