How to Know Your Imported Car's DGT Label Before You Buy It in Germany

One of the most expensive mistakes when importing a car is discovering, only after it is already registered in Spain, that it got a worse environmental label than you expected. The good news is that you can work this out before you buy, using three data points that appear on any serious German listing: fuel type, Euro standard (Schadstoffklasse) and first registration date (Erstzulassung).

The three data points you need from the listing

On portals like mobile.de or AutoScout24, every listing includes a technical data sheet with 'Schadstoffklasse' (emissions standard), 'Erstzulassung' (first registration date) and the fuel type ('Kraftstoff'). With those three fields, you can apply the DGT's criteria directly, before you ever contact the seller.

  • Kraftstoff (fuel): Benzin (petrol), Diesel, Elektro (electric), Hybrid, Autogas/LPG, Erdgas/CNG.
  • Schadstoffklasse (Euro standard): shown as 'Euro 6', 'Euro 6d-TEMP', 'Euro 5', etc.
  • Erstzulassung (first registration): the exact month and year.

Cross-checking the data against DGT criteria

If a listing says 'Benzin, Euro 6, Erstzulassung 03/2018', you have petrol with Euro 6 registered after January 2006: label C is guaranteed. If it says 'Diesel, Euro 6, Erstzulassung 11/2016', it also qualifies: diesel Euro 6 registered after September 2015, so label C. But if that same diesel showed 'Erstzulassung 06/2014', even with Euro 6, the registration date would miss the DGT's cutoff and it would land on label B instead. The rule is not just the emissions standard — it is the date as well.

Hybrids, electrics and gas vehicles

If the listing shows 'Hybrid' without a plug (HEV), the car gets label ECO, provided it also meets the Euro standard and date criteria of label C. If it says 'Plug-in-Hybrid' (PHEV), you need one more figure: the homologated electric range ('elektrische Reichweite'), which decides between label 0 (40 km or more) and label ECO (under 40 km). Pure electric cars ('Elektro') and hydrogen vehicles get label 0 with no further conditions.

Why it is worth calculating this before you buy

The environmental label directly affects the car's resale value in Spain, whether you can drive it into your city centre, and what you pay to park on regulated streets. Two cars that look identical and have the same mileage can end up with different labels purely because of a few months' difference in the registration date.

A single month's difference in the registration date can be the line between label C and label B. It is worth checking before you sign anything.

Caralyze verifies the exact technical data of any car you are considering in Germany and confirms in writing which environmental label it will get in Spain, before you commit to buying it.
