What you need before buying a car in Spain

To buy and register a car in Spain you need a NIE (Numero de Identificacion de Extranjero) which is your foreign ID number assigned by the Spanish police. EU citizens can obtain a NIE at any police station with the Oficina de Extranjeros. Non-EU citizens need a valid visa or residence permit. You also need a Spanish address for the registration documents and proof of that address such as a utility bill or rental contract. A Spanish bank account is not strictly required but makes the process significantly smoother for payments and standing orders for insurance and road tax.

Option 1 — Buy a car in Spain

Buying from a Spanish dealer is the simplest option. The dealer handles most of the paperwork and you drive away with Spanish plates. Prices in Spain are higher than in northern Europe but the convenience factor is real. Private sales from Spanish sellers follow the same process: a sales contract, a change of ownership at Trafico, and transfer tax of 4% to 8% depending on the autonomous community. The main drawback is higher prices and a smaller selection compared to the German or Dutch markets.

Option 2 — Import your car from your home country

If you already own a car in another EU country and are moving to Spain, you can bring it with you and re-register it. The process is the same as any intra-community import: deregister the car in your home country, drive it to Spain, declare the acquisition at the tax office, pass the ITV pre-registration inspection and register at Trafico. If you have been the registered owner for more than six months and have been living in the country of origin, you may qualify for the transfer of residence exemption which waives the registration tax. This exemption saves thousands of euros and is available to anyone establishing their primary residence in Spain.

Option 3 — Buy in another EU country and import

This is the option that offers the greatest savings. As an expat living in Spain, you have the same right as any Spanish citizen to buy a car anywhere in the EU and import it. The process is identical to what a Spanish buyer would follow. Many expats combine a trip to their home country with a car purchase, picking up the car during a visit to family and driving it back to Spain. This approach eliminates the transport cost entirely and can save between 3,000 and 15,000 euros depending on the car.

Transfer of residence exemption

If you are moving to Spain and bringing a car you have owned for at least six months, you can apply for the transfer of residence exemption from the registration tax. The requirements are that the car has been registered in your name in another country for at least six months, that you are establishing your habitual residence in Spain, and that you apply within 60 days of registering as a resident. This exemption can save between 0 and 14.75% of the car's market value in registration tax. You must keep the car for at least one year after importing it and cannot sell it without paying the exempted tax.
