Checklist: What to Check About Tires Before Importing a Car from a Cold-Winter Country

Every article in this series covers one piece of the tire picture when importing from a country with harsh winters. This one pulls it together into a single checklist to run through before you commit to a specific car from Germany, Austria, Sweden, Norway or Finland.

1. Confirm exactly what tires are currently mounted

Do not rely on listing photos alone. Ask the seller directly, in writing, what tires are on the car right now: brand, whether they are summer, winter or all-season, and whether they carry 3PMSF marking, plain M+S, or studs. This single question resolves most of the surprises covered elsewhere in this series.

2. Ask whether a second wheel set exists

German, Austrian and Nordic cars very often come with a second matched set — summer or winter, sometimes both plus a studded set in Norway or Finland. Get a written inventory of everything included in the sale before agreeing a price, since this affects both what you are paying for and what your transport quote should cover.

3. Check for studs specifically if buying from Sweden, Norway or Finland

Studded tires are legal and common there in season but not compliant for ordinary use on Spanish roads. If the car is on a studded set, plan for a swap before or immediately after arrival rather than assuming you can simply drive on them.

4. Verify tread depth and manufacture date on any set you plan to keep

Check the DOT code for manufacture date — rubber ages even with light use, and a technically legal but old tire is worth factoring into your budget for early replacement. Confirm tread depth is meaningfully above the 1.6mm legal minimum, not just barely over it.

5. Decide what to do with any set you won't use

Weigh selling locally in the country of origin (usually the better option for a winter or studded set you are unlikely to need much in Spain) against shipping it (worth it for a genuinely useful set, or where transport cost is marginal). See our dedicated articles on Scandinavian imports and German two-set cars for the detailed version of this decision.

6. If the car has all-wheel drive, ask about the drivetrain's service history too

For quattro, xDrive, 4MATIC or similar systems, ask about transfer case and differential service records specifically, not just general maintenance — these systems are a real asset when properly maintained and a real cost when neglected.

  • What tires are mounted right now, and do they carry 3PMSF, plain M+S, or studs?
  • Is there a second wheel set, and is it included in the sale — get it in writing.
  • If studded, plan the swap before driving in Spain outside the narrow technical exception.
  • Check DOT manufacture date and real tread depth, not just the legal minimum.
  • Decide sell-locally versus ship-it for any unused set, based on genuine likely use in Spain.
  • For AWD cars, check drivetrain service history alongside the tires.
  • Confirm none of this changes your IEDMT, ITP or VAT calculation — it does not, but budget the tire and transport decisions separately from the tax bill.

Spain has no general winter tire mandate. The real legal touchpoints are the specific signposted mountain passes where chains or 3PMSF tires become compulsory, and the general stud-height limit that rules out genuine Nordic studded tires for ordinary use. Everything else in this checklist is about getting good value and avoiding waste, not avoiding a fine.

Frequently asked questions

Should a tire inspection be part of a formal pre-purchase inspection?

Yes, it is a standard and inexpensive line item to add to any pre-purchase inspection of a car being imported, and worth insisting on given how often tire and wheel-set questions come up specifically with cold-climate imports.

Does any of this affect the transfer-of-residence exemption?

No, that exemption is about the car itself (ownership duration, prior residence abroad, application timing), and is entirely separate from tire condition or wheel-set questions.

Caralyze runs a full pre-purchase inspection, tires and wheel sets included, on every car we help import from Germany, Austria or the Nordics, so nothing in this checklist gets left to guesswork.
