Electric SUVs for Families: What to Import from Germany in 2026
This is not a review of one electric SUV — it is a buyer's guide to the segment as a whole, for a family deciding whether an EV makes sense as the car that does the school run, the weekend IKEA trip and the August drive to the coast. Germany's electric used-car market is deep enough now that the choice is real, and the tax picture is the simplest in this entire guide.
The one tax fact that makes this segment different
Every electric SUV, regardless of brand, size or price, has an official CO2 figure of 0 g/km, which places it squarely in Spain's 0% IEDMT bracket. This is not a special electric-vehicle incentive layered on top of the general rule — it is the same CO2-based IEDMT calculation every car goes through, applied to a number that happens to be zero. The saving is real and does not depend on price: a 60,000 EUR electric SUV and a 25,000 EUR one both pay 0 EUR in IEDMT.
ITP and VAT still work exactly as they do for any other car: buy privately and ITP is due on the transfer, buy from a VAT-registered dealer and it is not. Being electric changes nothing about that half of the tax picture — the golden rule (private seller means ITP, dealer means VAT, never both) applies identically.
What actually matters for a family, beyond the tax break
Family-relevant electric SUV shopping comes down to three practical questions that brochure range figures do not answer: how much range is left with two adults, two child seats and a full boot at motorway speed in summer heat with air conditioning on; how deep and regular a family's usual trips are relative to home or workplace charging access; and whether the specific car's battery has a State of Health report to back up its remaining usable capacity.
Real-world range: subtract before you compare brochure numbers
WLTP range figures are measured under conditions that rarely match a loaded family SUV on the AP-7 in July. As a rule of thumb, expect 15% to 25% less real-world range than the WLTP figure once you add four occupants, luggage and air conditioning running continuously, more if towing a bike rack or roof box. A car advertised at 500 km WLTP realistically delivers 375 to 425 km in that scenario — plan charging stops on the basis of the lower number, not the sticker figure.
Battery health: the one document to insist on
For any used electric SUV, ask the German seller for a State of Health (SoH) report from the manufacturer's own diagnostic tool, not a third-party estimate. A car three years old or younger showing above 90% SoH is a good result; below 85% on a car that age is worth negotiating on price or walking away from, since battery degradation is the single largest hidden cost risk in a used EV purchase and is not something the Spanish ITV checks or certifies.

Does the transfer-of-residence exemption add anything on top of the 0% IEDMT for an EV?
