Diesel vs Petrol vs Hybrid SUV: Which Powertrain Wins on Import Tax to Spain? (2026)

Same segment, same badge, same size — but a diesel, a petrol and a hybrid version of the same mid-size SUV can land in three different IEDMT brackets once they cross into Spain. This is a straight, numbers-first comparison of the three, using a realistic mid-size SUV as the reference point.

The variable that actually moves the tax bill

IEDMT depends only on the vehicle's official WLTP CO2 figure, split into four bands: 0% up to 120 g/km, 4.75% from 121 to 160, 9.75% from 161 to 200, and 14.75% above 200 g/km. It applies regardless of fuel type and regardless of who sold you the car — the same four bands apply to a diesel, a petrol and a hybrid version of the identical model. ITP or VAT is a separate question entirely, determined only by whether the seller was a private individual or a professional dealer, and applies identically across all three powertrains.

Reference case: same mid-size SUV, three engine choices

Take a popular mid-size SUV sold in Germany with 2.0 TDI diesel, 1.5 TSI petrol and full-hybrid variants, all at similar trim levels and roughly two years old with comparable mileage.

  • 2.0 TDI diesel, 148 g/km CO2: German price 24,500 EUR, IEDMT bracket 4.75%
  • 1.5 TSI petrol, 142 g/km CO2: German price 23,000 EUR, IEDMT bracket 4.75%
  • Full-hybrid petrol-electric, 119 g/km CO2: German price 25,500 EUR, IEDMT bracket 0%

The hybrid, despite the highest purchase price of the three in this example, pays no IEDMT at all because its CO2 figure clears the 120 g/km line, while the diesel and petrol versions both pay 4.75% on a similar table value, working out to roughly 1,090 EUR and 1,020 EUR respectively.

Full landed cost, private purchase, 4% ITP region

  • Diesel 2.0 TDI: 24,500 EUR + 800 transport + 940 ITP + 1,090 IEDMT + 340 ITV/DGT = approx. 27,670 EUR
  • Petrol 1.5 TSI: 23,000 EUR + 800 transport + 880 ITP + 1,020 IEDMT + 340 ITV/DGT = approx. 26,040 EUR
  • Full hybrid: 25,500 EUR + 800 transport + 980 ITP + 0 IEDMT + 340 ITV/DGT = approx. 27,620 EUR

In this specific example the higher purchase price of the hybrid nearly cancels out the IEDMT saving against the diesel, landing at almost the same total. The petrol version comes out cheapest overall purely because its German asking price was lowest, not because of anything tax-related. This is the pattern worth internalising: IEDMT differences matter, but they are one line among several, and a lower purchase price in Germany can outweigh a lower tax bracket.

Running costs the tax bill does not capture

Diesel remains more fuel-efficient than petrol on long motorway distances, which matters for families doing regular long trips, but faces stricter Spanish low-emissions zone rules for older Euro classes and generally carries a slightly heavier maintenance bill (DPF, particulate issues on high-mileage examples). Petrol suits shorter, mixed urban and suburban driving with lower maintenance complexity but higher fuel cost per kilometre on long trips. A full hybrid splits the difference reasonably well for stop-start urban and school-run driving, without the plug-in hybrid's dependency on home charging, though it rarely beats a modern diesel on pure motorway efficiency.

How to decide for a specific family

  • High annual mileage, mostly motorway: diesel usually wins on total fuel cost over 4-5 years, tax bracket allowing.
  • Mostly urban and short trips, no home charging: full hybrid usually wins on both fuel cost and IEDMT bracket.
  • Home charger available, mixed urban and occasional long trips: a plug-in hybrid or full EV is worth comparing directly against these three, using the separate guides for those segments.
  • Budget is the tightest constraint: compare actual German asking prices across all three before assuming the lowest-CO2 option is cheapest overall — it frequently is not.

Frequently asked questions

Does Spain's low-emissions zone rule out older diesel SUVs entirely?

Not entirely, but Euro 4 and older diesels face real restrictions in Madrid, Barcelona and other ZBE cities, and this is worth checking against the specific Euro class of any diesel SUV before buying, independent of the IEDMT calculation, which does not factor in Euro class at all.

Is a hybrid SUV's CO2 figure ever inaccurate for real driving?

Full hybrids (not plug-ins) tend to track their WLTP figure reasonably closely in mixed real-world driving since they cannot be driven purely on electric power for extended distances, unlike a plug-in hybrid whose figure depends heavily on charging habits.

Do I still pay ITP on a hybrid bought privately even though IEDMT is zero?

Yes — ITP and IEDMT are entirely separate taxes. A 0% IEDMT bracket has no bearing on whether ITP applies; that depends only on whether the seller was private or a professional dealer.

Caralyze runs the full landed-cost comparison across diesel, petrol and hybrid versions of the SUV you are considering, so the decision is based on the real total, not just the headline IEDMT bracket.
